Villeneuve: Alonso Was Always Special

Former Formula 1 world champion Jacques Villeneuve has given his views on some of today's drivers in an interview with Spain's Europa Press. Villeneuve who was Fernando Alonso's team mate for three races at Renault in 2004 says how the Spaniard stood out from the start.

"Fernando Alonso is a hard worker and stubborn. He'll Have more opportunities to be world champion, the option is there and he can win again, You could see he had great qualities. From the beginning, Flavio Briatore said he was a very special driver and we've seen that over the years," stated the 1997 champion.

Villeneuve went on to say Spain's other driver Jamie Alguersuari is "getting better"

"It is difficult to judge the drivers in small teams. Alonso was different because he was always special. Jaime is difficult to judge, but he is getting better, Being a Red Bull driver is very positive, and Alguersuari is in the right place to get it, get his chance" states Villeneuve

"This year, definitely, the favourite is Vettel. He’s going to win it very easily unless he does something stupid, His car is incredible and he has a very strong team, everyone is behind him, the mechanics, the sponsors, a great car. When things are like that, you’re in the clouds — nothing can go wrong"

Villeneuve takes the view of his former Renault team boss Flavio Briatore in saying prehaps Mark Webber isn't being treated as good as he could be by Red Bull compared to Vettel. About Lewis Hamilton Villeneuve says "Hamilton is aggressive and that’s good, it’s good to see that, but sometimes you have to know when to go for it and when to use your head"
